ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting 31/01/2018

Personnel

Two technical staff are available for supporting ISOLDE experiments and users, with the ISOLDE Collaboration funding 50% of their time (25% + 25%), shared with NA61. They will have more free time to work at ISOLDE during the summer. Mechanical and small electrical work is possible. The workshop is off the corridor of building 48 (the one with the bikes in). Karl will keep track of jobs and act as contact person. Therefore always proceed via Karl (or keep Karl informed) when you ask them for a job.

Their contact details are:

Technical news

  • Shut-down work
    • Target transport performed last Saturday. All went ok.
    • Ventilation work in the class A labs is going on at the moment.
    • The Class A laboratory will be unavailable from March until April.
    • Robot tests (trajectories, etc) performed successfully.
    • Montrac material issue – Not all parts appear to be as radiation hard as expected.
    • Laser window exchange is planned this week.
  • Radiation Protection
    • Issue of rezoning the hall in exceptional circumstances was discussed at a dedicated meeting last week with safety and RP present.
    • Karl reports that most people feel comfortable with the plans to use new signage and alarms, plus a patrol of the area.
    • This is with reference to the high intensity 94Rb run at HIE-ISOLDE last year, which was restricted due to radiation levels at the switchyard.
    • Users of other experiments expressed concerns about not being able to enter the hall for prolonged periods and proposed gaps to allow access.

IT

  • CERN will lose its academic license status for Microsoft software
  • Consequently, software such as Microsoft Office will be ~15 times more expensive.
  • CERN will be promoting the use of alternatives, such as Overleaf (https://www.overleaf.com/org/cern)
  • IP Phone expansion is on hold due to this issue.

Visits

  • Netherlands@CERN visit on Wednesday 6th February, in the morning.
  • Erwin is looking for guides.
  • ID cards were discussed since CERN appears to have a new policy that all people should wear their cards so that they’re visible. This shouldn’t affect the visits as they are performed now.

Summer students

  • Lina is collecting information about summer student projects to be submitted.
  • Deadline is Sunday 11th February.
  • Supervisors will meet to discuss priorities after submission.

INTC/Beam time requests

  • TAC committee tomorrow (1st February). Comments to be sent before weekend.
  • Beam time requests are due to be returned to Karl by Monday (5th February).
  • No meeting next week (6th February) due to the open session of the INTC.

A seminar by Sebastian Rothe followed the meeting, titled “Astatine - the rarest element on Earth: From laser spectroscopy to fundamental atomic properties” – https://indico.cern.ch/event/701022
