PhD position at the VITO beamline at CERN-ISOLDE

The ISOLDE facility is devoted to the production of various short-lived nuclei. The student will work on a new experimental beamline at ISOLDE devoted to Versatile Ion-polarized Techniques On-line (VITO). The beamline will use both unpolarized and spin-polarized nuclei for multidisciplinary experiments within nuclear physics, fundamental studies, material science, and biology. The experimental techniques will be nuclear-decay spectroscopy, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR), and Perturbed Angular Correlation (PAC). These will be employed in various probes, from solid-state samples requiring ultra-high vacuum to liquids with close-to-atmospheric pressures around them. For studies with polarized beams, the nuclear spin will be polarised with laser beams.

The student will be involved in hardware and software aspects of the new beamline: design of the beamline elements, ion-optics simulations, setup assembly, DAQ preparation, vacuum tests, spin-polarization tests with lasers, tests with stable beams, followed by NMR and PAC experiments with radioactive beams.

Student’s profile: hands-on person with physics or engineering background. Useful: some knowledge of vacuum beamlines and experimental equipment; basics of radiation or nuclear physics and interest in experiments with radioactive nuclei: nuclear physics, material science or biophysics; basic knowledge of CAD and ion-transport software, LabView or C(++).
