Minutes of the ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting, February 21st 2018

There were no comments to the minutes of the last ISOLDE PGM.

Technical news

  • HRS/GPS/REX/HIE-ISOLDE
  • Next week the target cooling water will be turned on and the cold checkout will begin.
  • Two empty target units with plasma sources will be installed for the cold checkout.
  • This week the front-ends were cleaned.
  • There is one more microswitch to be changed on HRS.
  • Next week a check of the MEDICIS Montrac will take place.
  • The Faraday cup FC490 will be investigated on GPS.
  • RILIS
  • The special RILIS target for alignment was installed on GPS.
  • The laser windows were exchanged on the two separators.
  • One of the lasers overheated last year and broke. The manufacturer agreed to replace the laser and it will be delivered in a couple of weeks.
  • Targets
  • The work on the LIEBE target is ongoing. The trajectory and coupling tests with the ISOLDE robot went well. The actual LIEBE target was used, which will be returned to the off-line lab.
  • Today the installation of cables for the LIEBE target began, following some RP concerns which were eventually cleared up.

Physics and schedule

  • Some preliminary ideas for the schedule will be circulated end of this week or beginning of next week.

Safety

  • There is an ongoing discussion about the reclassification of the ISOLDE hall during some of the high-activity HIE-ISOLDE runs. A safety committee meeting will take place next week, in which an ISOLDE document will be prepared. What is considered for now is only the reclassification of ISOLDE during 2018, for a maximum of 10 days, which will not completely prohibit access to the hall. Beyond LS2 a permanent procedure may have to be implemented.

Visits

  • The visit of the French students last week took place during a beam-line intervention at ISOLDE. It would be in the interest of safety to have an up-to-date calendar in order to cross-check visits with the schedule of beam-line interventions.
  • The Leuven VIP visit went well.
  • Friday there will be a visit of a Dutch delegation and a visit of 40 UK students.

AOB

  • The CD0.FC090 diagnostics box in front of ISOLTRAP was exchanged.
  • The ISOLDE Newsletter has not yet received any contributions. Possible contributors are kindly asked to check the LaTeX template and communicate to Vladimir Manea if problems are encountered.

Seminar

  • The meeting was not followed by a seminar.

The next PG meeting will take place on Wednesday, February 28th, at 14:00 in the ISOLDE visitors’ room (26-1-022). It will be followed by the seminar of Adam Vernon with the title “Multi-photon ionization of accelerated laser-ablated ions”.
