ISOLDE Physics Group Meeting 20/09/2017

Technical news
• GPS
- GPS setup for 94Rb went very well. However, problems with radiation
alarms at CA0 switchyard on Wednesday night.
- Proton current limited to <0.10 µA, added more shielding.
- Tried to improve tuning on Thursday, but tiny losses still giving alarms.
- RP involved to test running at 2.0 µA, but dose was too high for VITO who
were setting up nearby.
- Proposal to close off hall “not supported” on Friday so weekend ran at low
intensity the whole time.
- Alberto “improved” the tune to allow 0.70 µA and give a factor of 5 at
Miniball.
• HRS
- Target change on Monday morning.
- Stable beam delivered to VITO for tuning during technical stop on Tuesday
night.
• RILIS
- Scheme development for Nd ongoing, to be tested if solid-state lasers can
be used instead of dye lasers.
- Similarly done for Sm last month, this means less maintenance and more
stability in the power.
• REX/HIE
- Pulse length was stretched to 1.6 ms, from 1.0 ms, for the 94Rb run.
- Higher power demands could lead to more trips of RF.
- Actually, REX and HIE both running with remarkable stability.
- Pulse length will remain at 1.6 ms for upcoming runs.
• Targets
- #609 TaGdB6 target has been on the offline and is ready for Nd to Miniball.
- #599 Ti rolls target reused from Mg run and is now online for Na to VITO.
- #615 Ta foils target is finished and now cooling at the offline.
- #618 UCx target finished too. Sebastian improved the preparation
procedure so that only 4 days are required for the carbonisation of the
Uranium.
• Safety
- The issue of high intensity and high dose rates in the hall will be followed
up in the future to implement a procedure to safely run. It could be a
limited stay in radioactive areas or a complete closure of the hall.
- Discussions are on going with everyone involved and will be presented at
the PS-CSAP in the near future.
- In addition, the chain of command needs to be improved since the large
number of people required to sign off was prohibitive to the physics.
- Currently 5 departments have equivalence in safety issues within the hall.
- Audit of building 170 by CERN’s RP with a consultant to be performed in
coming months.

A.O.B.
• Researchers night
- Karl once again reminds people to volunteer for the ISOLDE stand at
European Researchers Night, 29th September from 1700-2300. He has sent
an email!
• Seminars
- Peter Möller will give a series of seminars on 2nd and 3rd October with
discussions afterwards. Place and time to be confirmed.
• Schedule
- Schedule until the end of the year due out next week. Probably there’ll be
two versions depending on LIEBE tests on GPS.
