 Job Description

 The UK's National Physical Laboratory (NPL) sits at the intersection between scientific discovery and real world application. The role
NPL has a vacancy for a research scientist to work in the neutron metrology section. The work will involve working on a wide variety of projects with partners from industry and academia, including the measurement of nuclear data for applications in the nuclear industry, and supporting instrument development and characterisation. In addition, NPL is aiming to invest in a new particle accelerator and the job holder would be involved in helping to build the business case and draw up the technical specifications.
The job holder would be working closely with the NPL / Surrey University Professor of Nuclear Metrology. Contributions to scientific journals and conferences are encouraged.
A degree in physics and a PhD in experimental nuclear physics or accelerator science are essential. Post-doctoral research experience would be useful.
The Requirements
• PhD/EngD in experimental nuclear physics or related field.
Desirable to have experience in several of the following:
• Excellent problem-solver, with record of achievement in a R&D environment.
• Knowledge and understanding of ionizing radiation detection.
• Experimental experience of ionizing radiation measurement and data analysis
• Track record of conference presentations and peer-reviewed publications.
• Skilled in developing software for instrumentation control and data analysis.
• Ability to work in an interdisciplinary project team, and as collaborator to academic & industrial partners.
