Postdoctoral Fellow Position in Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy

in the Department of Chemistry, Simon Fraser University,

Burnaby, BC, Canada

The Nuclear Science Group (NSG) at Simon Fraser University has an immediate

opening for a two-year Post-Doctoral Fellow (PDF) position. The group is involved in

gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments using stable and radioactive beams primarily at

TRIUMF, Canada’s National Laboratory for Particle and Nuclear Physics, and using

the TRIUMF-ISAC Gamma-Ray Escape Suppressed Spectrometer (TIGRESS) and

the Gamma-Ray Infrastructure For Fundamental Investigations of Nuclei (GRIFFIN)

spectrometer and their suite of ancillary detectors. A wide variety of techniques are

used to explore a plethora of phenomena in exotic atomic nuclei ranging from betaand

beta-delayed neutron decays, Coulomb excitation, transfer reactions, fusionevaporation

reactions, etc. In addition to these experiments, the NSG at SFU is also

involved and encourages participation in selected off-shore experiments. As part of

the GRIFFIN collaboration, the activities of the NSG include testing radiation

detectors in the local laboratory.

Specific responsibilities will include:

Testing the Compton suppression shields and associated electronics for the

GRIFFIN spectrometer

Taking a leading role in experiments with the GRIFFIN and TIGRESS

spectrometers and/or other specific experiments

Disseminating results as articles in peer-reviewed scientific journal and

through presentations at national and international conferences

Directly supervising undergraduate and graduate students

Minimum qualifications include:

PhD in experimental nuclear physics, or expected completion date in early

2016

Extensive knowledge of nuclear science, radiation measurements and the

operation of radiation detectors

Experience in performing gamma-ray spectroscopy experiments

Experience with dedicated software of gamma-ray spectroscopy data analysis

Excellent communication and superior writing skills
